32 Beginner Dictation
32.1 How to use this section
This section contains short texts to be dictated for practice. The texts are organized by Flesch–Kincaid readability. They do not strictly follow the order which concepts are introduced in the theory. However, theory sections may have links to these texts at the end.
The text in this section have a Flesch-Kincaid readability > 115, meaning very simple texts.
32.1.1 Layout
The layout has been designed for the user to easily review and practice the selected words used in dictation before listening and writing to dictation. The selected words for each text include both briefs and difficult/new words such as names and homonyms. The stroke shown is usually the brief or shortest stroke, not always the only way to write the word(s) and alternative strokes can be looked up with the Plover dictionary.
To encourage dictation practice, the actual text is hidden at the start, while selected words and their strokes are shown by default. Both sections are collapsible.
32.1.2 Phrasing
Phrases are underlined in the text itself, and the longest phrases take precedence. For example, the sentence “You will be a cat” contains two phrases, “you will,” and “will be.” Because “you will” is longer than “will be,” “you will” is underlined rather than “will be.” The longest phrase is underlined. Both phrases will appear in the “selected words” section. It is possible to write without using any of the phrases if desired, though phrasing will increase speed.
32.1.3 Controls
The “play” button will activate dictation synthesis on the website. The “check” button will compare user input with the original text. One thing of note is the text may be multiple paragraphs, something which is not indicated in the synthesized speech at the moment. The “visibility” button will hide the snippet if the “Hide Snippets” checkbox is checked in the controls. To un-hide all snippets, uncheck the “Hide Snippets” box.

The hen will sit on the eggs and keep them warm for three weeks. Then there will be chicks in the shells.
They will peek at the shell, and cry, "peep peep." The hen will break the shell, and the soft chicks will come out.

Dick is the son of a poor hack-man. One day he got a kick on the leg from the old nag that goes with the hack. The nag did not mean to kick Dick, but yet she hurt his leg, and he got sick and so has not been out for a long time. Poor sick Dick! He does not have much fun. He has a pet duck, but when he has fed it, it goes off to its pool in the yard.
Once he had a dog, Jack, that was fond of him, and that used to lick his hand, when Dick went to pet him. But, one day when a pack of dogs went by, Jack ran off with them, and Dick saw him no more.
Once, too, Dick had a cat. Her name was Puss. He used to deck her neck with bits of silk. But Puss went off in the hack one day and got lost. Dick has had poor luck with his pets.
Now and then Dick sits on a rock that is in the yard, and looks at the old nag, as she eats her half-peck of oats, at noon, or pats her neck, as she picks her hay from the rack.
Poor boy! Do you not wish he were well?
